Rigging for winter perch on the canal
A simple running leger and a lively worm is still the most reliable way to find canal perch in cold water.
The sewin run on the River Neath, like the Tawe, is very much an after-dark game once the water starts to drop and clear following summer rain.
A light spinning rod or a single-handed fly rod both work; spun sewin lures or a small silver-bladed spinner fished slow and deep will draw a take from a fish that has run up on the tide.
Check water levels before you go — sewin move on a fresh rise and fall quiet again once the river settles, so timing your session around the rain matters more than the tackle you use.
