Best baits for the Tennant Canal in summer

Caster and hemp for roach and skimmers, worm for the odd tench — what actually works on the canal.

In warm water the Tennant Canal fishes best on a steady loose-fed line of caster and hemp, taking a mixed net of roach and skimmers through the day.

Drop a lobworm or two into the same swim and be patient — the canal holds better tench and the occasional eel that will pick up a worm left still on the bottom while you feed the caster line.

A light waggler or a short pole line both work well; fish it slow and let the bait settle before expecting a bite.
